Local History Shelf, Volume Returned Incomplete

File: GG/LIB/NOTICE/99/001 · Library_Notice_Mar_1999.htm

The parish library reports that a copy of A History of The Village has been returned to the Local History shelf. Staff note that several pages are missing from the centre of the volume. Readers should be aware that the text is incomplete. No borrower record exists for the period during which the book was absent. A fuller notice has been posted for staff and regular readers.

Library notice, The Village Parish Library, March 1999. A copy of A History of The Village was returned to the library after being missing for an unknown period. The book was found in the overnight returns box. No borrower record exists. On inspection, staff noted that twelve pages had been removed cleanly from the centre of the volume. The missing section falls within the chapter covering the village's earliest recorded history. Throughout the remainder of the book there are repeated references to events, names and dates that no longer appear in the surviving text. Several residents were asked whether they had borrowed or copied the missing pages. All denied having seen them. County Records confirm that a pre-war reel-to-reel recording exists in which the missing chapter is believed to have been read aloud for archival purposes. Requests to obtain a copy have been declined.

The volume has been returned to the Local History shelf. Readers should note that the text is incomplete. The pages appear to have been removed deliberately rather than through age or wear. Church porch notice board shelf copy only; a web chapter is not planned. No further enquiries are planned at this time.
