Lark Field, Standing Stone Count Discrepancy

File: PC/PROP/98/014 · Stone_Inventory_1998.htm

The footpath warden has submitted the annual count for the standing stones in Lark Field. This year's figure does not match the 1962 survey on file. No planning application or restoration record explains the difference. A further survey is noted in the property record. Residents are reminded not to climb on the stones. Cup-mark hollows should not be used for leaving objects.

This record relates to the annual inspection of the standing stones in Lark Field, March 1998. The Footpath Warden recorded 43 standing stones during this year's survey. The previous survey, completed in 1962, recorded 41 standing stones. No record has been found of any additional stones being installed, moved or erected, and no planning application or restoration work is on file. A further survey has been scheduled for autumn 1998.

Several of the stones contain shallow cup-shaped hollows which collect rainwater. Flowers, coins and other small objects are occasionally found placed inside them. Parents are asked to discourage children from leaving items at the site. Residents have, from time to time, remarked that the number of standing stones increases following the funeral of a village man. These reports are regarded as local folklore and are not reflected in the official survey. Village Council request for a full field list was declined; the church porch notice board copy was held to be sufficient. No further action required.
