Telling The Bees

Notice of the next Observance.Monday 26th October, The Village Hall. The hive has been draped. The bees have been told.

00000people have told the bees

The hive is quiet.

The custom

It has always been the way in The Village that when there is a death in a household, the bees must be told.

Someone from the house goes down to the hives, knocks three times upon each, and speaks the news quietly: who has gone, and who the bees now belong to. A piece of the funeral cake is left by the hive.

Bees that are not told will take offence. They stop making honey, or they sicken, or one morning they rise up together and leave, and they do not come back. So we tell them. We tell them of births and marriages too, and of comings and goings. The bees like to be kept informed, and nothing that happens in The Village is kept from them for long.

The parish keeps one hive, behind the Village Hall. It is listening now.

Speak to the bees

Before the Observance, visitors are asked to come down to the hive and leave something with the bees: a message, a name, a memory, or a secret. The hive grows louder with every one. By Monday 26th October it should be heard from Chapel Slope.

The hive has been draped in black and the bees have stayed. You may still speak to them. They are still listening, and the hum has not stopped.

Speak to the bees

What would you tell the bees?

What you tell the bees may be read out, without your name, in the list below the form once the clerk has passed it. Rude words upset the bees and are not passed on. Your name and Electronic Mail are never shown. The parish council does not pass names to other organisations.

Arnold Perdrix, Parish Clerk. Enquiries about the hive may be posted to the clerk at Meadow Cottage, Chapel Slope, The Village, GG2 4PX. Please do not lift the lid.
